Overview
Asset finance explained
Asset finance covers loans and leases used to acquire income-producing equipment, with the asset itself serving as security. Cars and utes are the most familiar example, but the same products finance trucks and trailers, excavators and earthmoving gear, forklifts, agricultural machinery, medical and dental equipment, commercial kitchen fit-outs, IT hardware and even boats and caravans for personal use. Because the equipment secures the loan, lenders generally don't require property security, deposits can be low or nil for established businesses, and approval is often quicker than for a general business loan.
The main structures are the chattel mortgage, where your business owns the asset from day one and the lender holds a mortgage over it; the finance lease, where the lender owns the asset and you rent it with an option to purchase at the end; and hire purchase or rental arrangements. For employees, a novated lease through your employer can be another route. Each has different implications for GST, depreciation and deductions, so your accountant's input matters. Most lenders also offer a balloon (residual) payment at the end of the term, which lowers regular repayments but leaves a lump sum to pay, refinance or cover by selling the asset.
Lenders assess the asset's age, type and resale value as well as your business's trading history, ABN and GST registration, and existing commitments. Established businesses with a clean record may qualify for streamlined low-doc asset finance up to certain limits with minimal paperwork. Traps to watch include dealer finance that looks cheap because of a large balloon, financing an asset over a term longer than its useful life, and paying for insurance or add-ons rolled into the loan without noticing. We compare across our panel, structure the term and balloon sensibly, and arrange finance for private sales and auctions, not just dealership purchases.

Questions we hear every week
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, ask — we'll reply personally.
A broker works for you, not a bank. We assess your situation, compare loans from our panel of 50+ lenders, recommend the ones that suit you and manage the application through to settlement. In most cases our service costs you nothing: the lender pays us a commission once your loan settles, and we disclose exactly what that is before you proceed.
Your bank can only offer its own products and will assess you against its own policy. We compare dozens of lenders, know which ones treat your income type, deposit size or property most favourably, and negotiate on your behalf. We are also legally required to act in your best interests, which a bank's lending staff are not.
It depends on your income, living expenses, existing debts, deposit and the lender's assessment rate, and the answer can differ by six figures between lenders. Our borrowing power calculator gives a rough guide; a strategy call gives you a real number based on the lenders most likely to say yes.
Pre-approval typically takes a few business days to two weeks depending on the lender and how complete your paperwork is. Formal approval after you find a property usually takes one to two weeks, and settlement is commonly 30 days from contract in Queensland. We have had loans approved in under ten days when it mattered.
No. Our initial assessment and lender comparison do not involve a credit enquiry. A credit check only happens when we lodge a formal application with the lender you choose, and because we match you to the right lender first, you avoid the multiple enquiries that come from applying to several banks yourself.
No. Alongside home, investment and refinance loans we arrange commercial property finance, business loans, asset and equipment finance, car loans, personal loans and SMSF property loans. Many of our clients are business owners who use us for both their home and their business.
