Overview
Choosing the right business loan
Most businesses need finance at some point — to smooth cash flow through a slow quarter, fund stock ahead of a busy season, open a second location, take on a larger contract, buy out a partner or clear an ATO liability. The right facility depends on the purpose and how quickly the money will be repaid. Term loans suit longer-term investments; overdrafts and lines of credit suit fluctuating working capital; invoice finance releases cash tied up in unpaid invoices; and equipment should usually be financed against the asset itself rather than from general borrowings.
Business loans fall broadly into secured and unsecured. Secured loans use property or other assets as collateral and generally offer lower rates and longer terms, but they involve valuations and legal work and can tie up the family home. Unsecured loans rely on your trading history and cash flow — many lenders assess recent bank statements and ATO records directly — and can be approved within days, at the cost of higher rates and shorter terms, usually with a director's guarantee. Lenders typically want a trading history of six to twelve months or more, a registered ABN, and a clean record on existing commitments.
Common traps include borrowing on a short-term facility for a long-term purpose, misreading a factor rate as an interest rate, stacking several small loans that together strain cash flow, and signing personal guarantees without understanding them. There's also a growing number of lenders offering fast, app-based approvals; some are excellent, others expensive. We compare the true cost across our panel — banks, non-banks and fintech lenders — and present it plainly. Where your situation is stronger than a fast unsecured product warrants, we'll say so and look at cheaper secured options instead.

Questions we hear every week
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, ask — we'll reply personally.
A broker works for you, not a bank. We assess your situation, compare loans from our panel of 50+ lenders, recommend the ones that suit you and manage the application through to settlement. In most cases our service costs you nothing: the lender pays us a commission once your loan settles, and we disclose exactly what that is before you proceed.
Your bank can only offer its own products and will assess you against its own policy. We compare dozens of lenders, know which ones treat your income type, deposit size or property most favourably, and negotiate on your behalf. We are also legally required to act in your best interests, which a bank's lending staff are not.
It depends on your income, living expenses, existing debts, deposit and the lender's assessment rate, and the answer can differ by six figures between lenders. Our borrowing power calculator gives a rough guide; a strategy call gives you a real number based on the lenders most likely to say yes.
Pre-approval typically takes a few business days to two weeks depending on the lender and how complete your paperwork is. Formal approval after you find a property usually takes one to two weeks, and settlement is commonly 30 days from contract in Queensland. We have had loans approved in under ten days when it mattered.
No. Our initial assessment and lender comparison do not involve a credit enquiry. A credit check only happens when we lodge a formal application with the lender you choose, and because we match you to the right lender first, you avoid the multiple enquiries that come from applying to several banks yourself.
No. Alongside home, investment and refinance loans we arrange commercial property finance, business loans, asset and equipment finance, car loans, personal loans and SMSF property loans. Many of our clients are business owners who use us for both their home and their business.
